Reflection on Field Observation Artifact for SPED 772
The artifact selected for reflection are a series of Field Observations with Data Analysis for SPED 772, a course focused on “Supporting Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Educational Settings."
The primary purpose of this artifact was to document, analyze, and evaluate observed supports, interventions, and interactions in various educational settings designed to meet the academic, behavioral, communication, executive functioning, social interaction, and least restrictive environment (LRE) needs of students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). By conducting detailed observations and recording objective data on the implementation and outcomes of interventions, this artifact aimed to facilitate an understanding of effective strategies for supporting students with ASD.
In addressing the assignment requirements, I completed over 16 hours of meticulous observations, explicitly noting environmental details, student characteristics, observed behaviors, and the effectiveness of supports and interventions. Each component of the assignment—academic supports, behavioral expectations, communication expectations, executive functioning expectations, social interaction expectations, and least restrictive environment—was thoroughly documented using structured data collection forms. An example is the implementation of Avian-Assisted Intervention (AAI), where I observed significant improvements in student engagement, social interactions, and willingness to remain in less preferred environments. The data analysis detailed how the student transitioned from frequent isolation to actively participating in social interactions with peers and adults due to this intervention.
The artifact achieved a score of 100% on all submissions. Given the thoroughness and accuracy with which I initially completed the observations and data collection, revisions were deemed unnecessary. Each aspect of the observation was documented comprehensively, providing clear examples and insightful analysis. My choice to not revise was informed by the consistent feedback indicating thoroughness and excellence in meeting the outlined criteria.
Engaging in this assignment significantly enhanced my development as a special educator. It provided me with practical insights into the complexities of meeting diverse needs of students with autism in educational settings. The most impactful learning was recognizing the necessity of individualized interventions like Avian-Assisted Intervention, which significantly improved social interactions and reduced self-isolation behaviors in students. This hands-on experience underscored the critical importance of using evidence-based strategies tailored to each student’s unique strengths and challenges. This artifact and the associated experience have reinforced my commitment to advocating for and implementing effective, individualized educational practices in my professional career.
